Halloween costumes should be fun, not one more thing to stress about. This list is split so you can go straight to what you need: adults first, then kids, plus toddlers and babies, teens, couples, whole-family ideas and even your dog.

Every pick here is easy to order, easy to wear for a whole night, and recognizable without a long explanation at the door. And yes, our family is dressing up too. Our costumes and photos will be added after Halloween.

Halloween Costumes for Adults

For Women

Greek Goddess Toga

A draped toga dress looks put-together with almost no effort. Add gold jewelry, a leaf headband or sandals from your closet, and you are done. It is also a comfortable option for a party where you actually want to sit down.

Best for: parties, couples costumes and anyone who wants elegant over scary.

Build-Your-Own Costume Pieces

Not ready to buy a full costume? One statement piece can do the heavy lifting. A faux leather lace-up corset top or a wide elastic waist belt turns jeans, a black dress or a flowy skirt into a witch, pirate, cowgirl or Renaissance look in minutes, and you will wear them again after October.

Best for: last-minute costumes and outfits you want to reuse.

Pirate Wench Dress

A corset, skirt and blouse in one order, with hundreds of reviews behind it. It pairs easily with a pirate or Renaissance set for a couples costume.

Best for: couples costumes and anyone who wants a full look without shopping for separates.

Cozy Hooded Animal Jumpsuit

If you want to be comfortable all night, this is it. It is a soft one-piece with a hood, so you can layer underneath when it is cold. Pick your animal and you are done.

Best for: cold nights, long trick-or-treat routes and moms who want comfort first.

For Men

Renaissance, Viking or Pirate Set

This 8-piece medieval set gives you a full outfit in one order, and it works three ways: Renaissance faire, Viking or pirate. That makes it an easy match for a couples or family theme.

Best for: the guy who wants a full costume without hunting down separate pieces.

Wig and Beard Set

Hair is what makes a costume recognizable. A brown wavy wig and full beard set finishes the Renaissance or Viking look, and it also works for biblical, mountain man or wizard costumes.

Best for: adding instant character to a simple costume.

Inflatable Chicken

Funny costumes get the most photos, and this one is ready in about a minute. Most inflatable costumes run on a small battery fan, so check what it needs and pack spares.

Best for: parties, costume contests and the dad who likes to make people laugh.

Halloween Costumes for Kids

For Girls

Princess Dress with Cape

A princess dress with a tulle cape is a classic for a reason. It is twirl-worthy, easy to put on, and gets played with long after Halloween in the dress-up bin.

Best for: little girls who want to feel like royalty, and dress-up play all year.

Galaxy Princess Dress

For something a little different from the usual pink, this teal galaxy princess dress has a floor-sweeping train and a royal look that stands out in a crowd of trick-or-treaters.

Best for: the girl who wants to be a princess, just not the one everyone else is.

Light-Up Witch Dress

A witch costume that lights up is fun and practical. It helps kids stay visible after dark. This one comes in sizes for ages 3 to 10, and there is also a pink light-up witch dress if she wants a sweeter version.

Best for: trick-or-treating after dark and kids who love a little sparkle.

Vampire Princess Dress

Spooky and pretty at the same time, a vampire princess dress is a great middle ground for girls who want something a little scary without a scary mask.

Best for: ages 3 to 12 who want spooky, not gory.

For Boys

Ninja

A ninja costume is simple, comfortable and easy to move in, which matters on a long night of trick-or-treating. Look for a set that includes the mask and accessories so you are not piecing it together the week of Halloween. Want a little more color? The dragon ninja costume adds a dragon design.

Best for: active kids who want to run, not waddle.

See the Kids Ninja Costume Set on Amazon →

Grim Reaper

A hooded cape and scythe prop make an instantly recognizable costume, and the cape fits over a hoodie on a cold night.

Best for: kids who want spooky and cold-weather trick-or-treating.

Astronaut

An astronaut costume is a great pick for younger kids who want something fun, not scary. Check the size chart before ordering, since it runs in smaller kids’ sizes.

Best for: little ones who love space and do not want anything spooky.

T-Rex Dinosaur

Dinosaurs never go out of style in our house. This one has thousands of strong reviews, which matters when you are buying a costume sight unseen.

Best for: dinosaur lovers and kids who want to roar, not run in a stiff costume.

Costumes for Toddlers and Babies

Toddler Witch Set

A classic little witch costume with thousands of reviews. Check the size chart and size up if you plan to layer.

Best for: first Halloweens and matching a sibling or mom.

Little Doctor Set

A doctor set gets worn long after Halloween. Our youngest wore a doctor coat for our Jurassic Park year and loved it.

Best for: toddlers who want to join a family theme, and the dress-up bin.

Baby Animal Romper

A soft flannel romper with a hood. Warm, simple and very sweet.

Best for: babies and cold-weather trick-or-treating.

Costumes for Tweens and Teens

Light-Up Transforming Mask

Teens often do not want a full costume. This LED mask changes faces, gets a reaction, and works with their own clothes.

Best for: teens who want cool, not cute.

Couples Costumes

Pirate and Wench

Pair the Pirate Wench Dress above with a men’s pirate set and you have a matching look with very little planning.

Best for: date nights and adult parties.

Peanut Butter and Jelly

A funny, easy couples costume that everyone recognizes from across the room. Check the size chart, since these are sized for adults.

Best for: couples who want to laugh, and last-minute plans.

Family and Group Costumes

Matching Skeleton Onesies

Glow-in-the-dark skeletons in sizes for the whole family. One theme, one search, everyone matches.

Best for: families who want the easy win and great group photos.

Yellow Hat, Goggles and Gloves Set

A budget group costume. Add jeans and a yellow shirt, and the whole family is instantly recognizable.

Best for: big groups, coworkers and tight budgets.

Costumes for Your Dog

Lion Mane

Big dogs are hard to dress up. A mane is quick to put on and does not cover their legs.

Best for: large dogs and dogs who do not love full costumes.

See the Dog Lion Mane on Amazon →

Bat Wings

Wings are simple, spooky and easier for most dogs to tolerate than a full costume.

Best for: dogs of any size and quick photos.

What Our Family Is Wearing This Year

Our Daughter: Glinda

My daughter is going as Glinda this year, and this pink Glinda dress comes with accessories, so the whole look is ready to go out of the box. She normally wears a size 8, and we went with the 9–10 so there is room for leggings or a long-sleeve shirt underneath on a cold night. If your child is between sizes, size up.

Me: The Green Witch

Our daughter is Glinda, so I am going green. This 5-piece set covers the whole look in one order: a hooded cloak, witch hat, long gloves with nails and glasses, plus green face paint.

Here is my real-life change: my skin does not love face paint, so I am skipping the full green face. Instead, I am doing a lighter, modified green look with a waterproof green glitter stick. It still reads as the green witch in photos, and I can wash it off at the end of the night without regretting it.

My Husband: The Green Victorian Tailcoat

His original prince costume would not have arrived in time. Shipping out here can take up to 30 days, so we changed plans. A green Victorian tailcoat matches the family color scheme, looks sharp in photos, and can be worn over a plain shirt and dark pants he already owns.

Real-life tip: check the delivery date before you fall in love with a costume. If you live somewhere rural like we do, order early or have a backup plan.

How to Choose the Right Costume Online

Before clicking buy, check five things:

  • The size chart, using actual measurements rather than the usual clothing size

  • What is included in the package

  • The estimated delivery date

  • Whether the costume can fit over warm layers

  • Whether masks, hems and accessories are safe for the event

Costume listings are especially inconsistent about accessories. A wig, shoes, weapon, hat or bag may appear in the picture without being included in the purchase.

Easy Last-Minute Costume Formula

If your first choice sells out, do not panic. Pick a character with three recognizable signals: one main color, one hairstyle or hat, and one prop. That is usually enough for people to understand the costume without an exact replica.

A costume people can recognize is fun. A costume you can actually wear for the whole night is better.
